The Mariposa Women's Luncheon

Thank you for your interest in the Mariposa Women's Luncheon. We hope to see at this annual event in the Spring of 2011.

Do you remember your first school dance, your sweet sixteen or realizing that your mom can be your friend too? For many of us, those are just a few of the steps that have made us the women we are today. Unfortunately, the young women in Youth Progress Association’s Mariposa Program never had the opportunity to make some of these memories. Many of the young women in Mariposa were abused, experienced multiple foster homes, have lower functioning IQs and ended up in the juvenile detention system. Due to those factors, they often lacked educational opportunities and have themselves acted out sexually. While we cannot rewrite the past, with your help we can make their futures brighter!

The program, which serves young women aged 13 – 25, helps them to gain a sense of self and personal confidence. For many of us, these skills developed through our daily interactions at school and home. The young women in the Mariposa Program have not had the opportunity to engage in many “normal” activities in their past, yet the program seeks to provide them with a life much like their peers. Mariposa provides a family atmosphere where the girl’s voices are heard, valued and taken seriously. As they have typically never known what a healthy family or relationship is like, staff provides a sense of community that acts as the foundation for their future relationships.

While at Youth Progress Association they have access to vocational training, an accredited high school, counseling, therapeutic proctor home living and the chance to gain the skills necessary to successfully transition into independent living.

Please join the young women at their party to help them celebrate their youth and envision a positive, healthy future.
